CALL TO CHEROKEE TRIBAL ARTISTS
The Cherokee Nation Health Department is seeking a Cherokee tribal artist to create a bronze sculpture to be permanently displayed in the main rotunda floor area of the Cherokee
Nation’s Three Rivers Health Clinic in Muskogee, OK. Artist selection will be in compliance with Cherokee Nation Legislative Act 01-07 and 19.07.
Background:
In order to expose and educate the general public as well as Cherokee Tribal members of the rich Cherokee history and culture, segments of the 14 county Cherokee Nation
jurisdictional area has been themed for specific period of Cherokee tribal history. The theme for the Muskogee area which includes the Three Rivers Health Clinic is the
1870’s and the Cherokee Male and Female Seminary period.
Project Description:
The bronze statue will be a figurative representation of a Cherokee Male Seminary student and a Cherokee Female Seminary student. The statue is to be historically accurate in
dress. The artist will have latitude to interpret the physical characteristics and stance of the students. Artists will be responsible for their own research. The archives at
Northeastern State University and University of Oklahoma are excellent research sources. In its finished form, the statue should be a bronze sculpture 1.5 times life size,
approximately 7 to 9 feet tall.
Budget:
Budget amount will be negotiated with selected artist.
Application Process:
Interested artists will submit a letter of interest outlining their qualifications. The letter of interest should include their general approach, a sketch of their proposed representation
and anticipated completion time after notification of selection. Artists will also include labeled images of recent work or work related to this type of project. Images may be prints or
digitals submitted on a CD in jpeg format. An annotated image list corresponding to the file name on the CD should include the artist’s name, title of the work, completion date,
location (if permanently sited), project details, project contact and contact information, dimensions and medium.
All applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on December 7, 2007.

Selection Panel and Criteria
The Cherokee Cultural Committee and representatives of the Cherokee Nation Health Department will review submissions.
The panel will evaluate the artist’s previous work, past experience completing projects on time and within budget guidelines and sketch of artist’s planned representation.
