Daniel HorseChief, Cherokee/Pawnee artist, creates both paintings and sculptures which portray historic and contemporary Native American themes.
Dan HorseChief was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1969. His Pawnee father died at an early age, leaving Dan to be raised by his Cherokee mother, Mary Adair.
It was his mother who taught Dan to appreciate and understand Cherokee culture and to refine his ability as an artist.
Dan received formal training as a student of Ruthe Blalock Jones at Bacone College and at the Institute of the American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico,
where he received an AA in Museum Studies. His preferred paint mediums are gouache, acrylic, and oil. His sculpture and paintings have received "Best of Show"
in local and national showings.
Dan was recently invited to the Versilles in France to show his historical work and is now working on a sculpture for the new All-Purpose Building on the campus of Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah.

Sculpture
HorseChief is well known for his bronze sculpture of Dragging Canoe, titled "A Friendly Warning" which depicts Dragging Canoe listening to the message of a chickadee {pictured left}.
Dragging Canoe was an early Cherokee Chickamauga War Chief who led his warriors in resisting the takeover of Cherokee lands by early American settlers in the east – he did not favor ceding Cherokee lands by treaty. He was the son of Cherokee Peace Chief
Attacullaculla, and a first cousin of Nancy (Nani) Ward.
Dan's sculpture of this historic Cherokee warrior has been extremely well received, as is evident from the numerous awards it has earned,
to include:
