Mary HorseChief Henderson Mary is a second-generation artist, daughter of artist Mary Adair and sister of artist’s (Dan HorseChief) and Sam HorseChief Jr. She is a graduate of Muskogee High School and studied art at the University of Oklahoma, Bacone College, and Northeastern State University. While at Bacone, she studied under Ruthe Blaylock Jones and Dick West. Mary then studied under Jim Terrell, R.C. Coones and Jerry Choate at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Mary graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and a minor in Native American Studies from NSU in 2000.

In addition to watercolor, Mary also works in acrylic, oil, pottery, drawing, photography, Cherokee moccasins and other traditional crafts.


Mary HorseChief has worked for the Cherokee Nation for fifteen years, and is the Community Services liaison for the Cherokee Nation Prevention Services, and collaborates with community members to organize community coalitions and implement activities designed to reduce the harmful effects of drug abuse, among Cherokee citizens.


Mary makes her home with her husband, Jim Henderson, in Welling, Oklahoma. Mary is a founding member of the Cherokee Artist’s Association.
