Take a peek at what Dan HorseChief has been up to in the wee hours of the morning...
[update: July 17, 2007]
We haven't yet gotten Dan's narrative on this stirring dipiction of Cherokee culture and history (still in-progress at the time of this shooting),
but it was only hours away from it's journey to the Santa Fe art show "Plants Are Our Allies", at the Gary Farmer Art Gallery (July 13 - Aug 12).
The sun was just beginning to light the sky when I left my studio to peek in on Dan. I was awe-struck and was really wanting to hear "the story"
behind this work, but Dan had that bleary-eyed, "night-before-deadline" look which told me there would be a better time to get that.

But words somehow fall short of being able to express what I felt when standing in front of this exceptional work of art carved in
Spanish Cedar. It wasn't just the flowing movement or masterful carving that struck me... But one could hardly miss how this poignant piece
embodies the spirit of our culture, at an extraordinarily tumultuous transition in time when many of the old ways from the mound-builder period
were rapidly evaporating into a distant past.
Yet it simultaneously speaks to our enduring ability to adapt and renew... in harmony with our once far-deeper rooted connections with Nature.
Once the eyes have followed the flow that circles around to each part of the story, they inevitably reach the hands that
speak volumes. A tender moment in the fields while they work and toil in their partnership for their sustenance, bringing a beautiful harmony to the whole.
Nice Work Dan!

Regarding: The passing of the "Indian Arts and Crafts Copyright Act of 2007"
[update: April 27, 2007]
Cherokee Artists' Association celebrates its first historical victory! With the unanamous backing of our Council (once again) we have successfully attained our mission in the passage of the Indian Arts & Crafts Copyright Act - signed off by Chief Smith on April 23, 2007.
Now Cherokee artists shall retain and control their copyright at the initial art purchase made by Cherokee Nation and/or its entities. Afterwhich, each individual artist can negotiate (by a separate contract) their own individual licensing agreements (should they so desire). This Act now becomes part of the Cherokee Nation Constitution and is law, thanks to all you members and all the support you have showed in the past years for our organization.
A special Thanks to all who wrote your council members. They got your message. A special Thanks to attorney Todd Hembree who wrote this clean, simple legislation, just the way we wanted it (After Phylis Yargee informed us that's what we needed). And a very special thanks to our Council members, in particular Phylis Yargee and Bill John Baker whom without their help, this could've been a "mission impossible". We love you guys! They are true supporters of Cherokee arts and culture.
